A wire is made of electrically conductive material, ie a conductor that is a wire or combination of multiple wires connected as part of the circuit. Commonly electrical wires are made out of copper or aluminum and they are insulated with plastic or rubber insulation. Electrical cable might contain connectors, which allows it to be connected as easily removable into it’s destination.

Multicore wire is referred as cable. Electrical wires and cables are manufactured for various purposes and for numerous applications: they are manufactured for high voltages, high temperatures and to resist mechanical stress (robot cables) and chemical stress (special bedding materials). Shielded cable is required In radio technology and information communication (structure has additional shielding sheath). With high frequency cable creates always a transmission line, which has it’s own transfer impedance, which is required to take into account when transferring signals.

Wire thickness is represented as cross-section area/mm². Most common thicknesses are 0,5; 0,75; 1,0; 1,5; 2,5; 4; 6; 10; 16 and 25 mm². Cable current carrying capability is depending on the cross-section area - under normal circumstances 1,5mm² copper conductor withstands about 10A current. The current that exceeds the wire’s rated current will heat up electrical conductor. Heating is non-beneficial phenomena in electrical transfer. Because of it electrical energy is transformed into heat energy and reducing transfer efficiency. Heating wire may also be a safety hazard for the environment as in a form of fire.
