Eaton Powerware 9125 1000i suits perfectly for 24/7 servers and Internet applications, data centers, centralized UPS solutions and other critical IT-solutions and also for feeding undisturbed electricity to industrial surveillance and automation solutions. At first the "Double conversion" circuit rectifies and filters mains power and after that UPS internal switching mode power supply electronics creates regulated power at the output. Because of this it will protect information and production systems from all power surges. Typical uptime with internal batteries for this kind of UPS unit is about 5-9 minutes. Powerware 9125-series 1000-3000VA units are equipped with socket connections. Device uptime can be extended with separate external battery module (EBM) which is made by Powerware or a decent do it yourself guy can make up the necessary connections and cables for example one may connect two truck batteries into series and extend uptime by this (hopefully the user knows what he is doing then)

How does one use this device, explained in simple English:

  • Plug unit into mains power and turn on
  • Connect device or devices of your choice into back panel. (Check from the device rating plate just in case that you will not overload the UPS. There is usually written power consumption in (most cases) Watts. This device can supply 800W / 1000VA at the max)
  • Use device.
  • Wait for power black out or power spikes or other abnormalities in mains power.
  • In case power supply is cut off the UPS will let out a nasty sound to remind the user about this incident, that in case you will not cease what ever you are doing the power will be cut out soon.
  • When electricity comes back on you do not need to do anything...If there is a reason to presume that power will not come back shortly then turn off your device in a controlled manner.

How easy it really is?

It is not necessary to use this for information technology. One may build a back up power supply for small microwave oven or just to charge electric tooth brush during the blackout. You may also protect your computers network cards by routing the network traffic through UPS and by this filtering out spikes (transients) that may occur into network cables. Configuration can be expanded and diversify by taking all the fun out of communication bus and setting up behind that some automatic shutdown protocols for servers or other industrial devices. When connecting REPO one may connect the UPS into existing fire alarm which will shut down devices in case of emergency and by this will not feed electricity into devices which are set on fire and making the situation worse.
