Relays are used as an interface between different signal levels or to isolate one signal from another. Relay is similar in function to a contactor. The modules are often used to enable the outputs of PLC's to control higher voltage and current loads. For example, a load voltage can be even 250 V and it will be still completely galvanically isolated from the PLC.

Relays have the following qualities:

  • Small size, but compared to size can still connect large currents and voltages

  • Does not interfere with the controlled signal besides for the contacts resistive effect (in practice no effect on anything)
