The most common function of a diode is to allow an electric current to pass in one direction (called the diode's forward direction), while blocking current in the opposite direction (the reverse direction). Thus, the diode can be viewed as an electronic version of a check valve. Semiconductor diode consists of P-N junction which allows the electricity to flow in one direction. Diode functionality can be tested with multimeter’s diode testing function. This function will display the threshold voltage when + terminal is connected to anode and - terminal to cathode. This way the current flows in forward direction. If the polarity is reversed there is virtually no current flow and no threshold voltage will be measured (indicated then there must be other components in parallel or the diode is broken). Typically failed diode turns into short circuit or just breaks internally... Commonly a third option is that you will definitely see that it is burned / cracked / completely blown apart.
Typical applications for general purpose rectifier diode:
- Rectifying alternating current
- Half wave rectifying with 1 diode (sine wave’s another half is rectified and other one is left unused)
- Full wave rectifying with 4 diodes (Graetz bridge) (Sine wave’s both halves are rectified)
- Idiot’s way of lowering voltage (each silicon diode connected in series drops down the voltage with the amount of it’s threshold voltage, ie about 0,6...0,8V depending on a diode and it’s temperature)
- For protecting a device against reverse polarity voltage (connected in series and in forward direction with the operating voltage)
- For protecting a device against reverse polarity voltage by burning a fuse and most likely also the diode (connected in parallel with the supply voltage and in reverse direction)
- To protect sensitive digital inputs by connecting a diodes forward and reverse in parallel with the input signal (voltage that rises over the threshold voltage is shorted out through diodes and sensitive digital input will not burn)
- As a temperature sensor by measuring the threshold voltage (Threshold voltage will vary according to the temperature)
- Restricting electricity flow into wrong places or into wrong way (as an example by using as a separation diode when using device with batteries or power supply in order not to blow batteries with power supply)
- Well aren’t they just nice and kinda must have for everyone who tinkers even a tiny bit... Buy yours today!
