The capacitance is typically indicated by 3x numbers. First two set the first two numbers and third sets the amount of zeros. After that comes a unit (nF, µF) or typically if there is no unit specified then the value is in pF. A letter after that usually represents tolerance and after that comes a number featuring voltage rating. Occasionally voltage rating can also be separated from the capacitance identification.

Typical capacitor fault symptoms:

• Capacitor is swollen/cracked/blown/leaked
• The charge capacitance µF value of the motor capacitor differs from the value stated value by more than the given tolerance when measured with a LCR meter or a multimeter capable measuring  capacitors
• Capacitor leaks more than it should (measured in a test circuit sensing leakage current)
• Motor is weak, makes abnormal noise, smells burned, blows a fuse (if used as motor capacitor)
