This is a bit unknown power supply. It does only have model marking, but inside it has Nautronic 9310 B power supply board and Dantrafo DT 4033-1 97/17 26V 5A and 28V 5A transformer in it. Power supply frame is made from 3mm thick aluminium and electrified parts hide nicely under a small Plexiglas cover.

Transformer is an electromagnetic device, which converts alternating electricity voltage or current into another voltage or current of the same frequency. Simple transformer has two wingdings around a steel core, which are insulated from each other, primary winding and secondary winding. Energy is transferred from circuit to another with mutual inductance: current in primary winding creates changing magnetic flux into the steel core. That, in turn, induces a secondary winding terminals with the corresponding voltage depending on the number of turns in the winding (electromotive force).

When choosing a power supply you need to know a couple of things (They are usually written into device or it’s power supply):
  • Operating voltage (in Finland ja Europe 230VAC)
  • Output voltage (with this you usually need to be precise, ie if it is written 12VDC in device then use 12VDC power supply, if you are not certain that your device will work with other voltages as well)
  • Does your device use alternating current (AC, VAC) or direct current (DC, VDC)
  • Power supply power or current requirement
    • How much output current capacity is required from power supply (If a certain ampere (A) rating is written in device then power supply must at least supply that amount, ie 8A power supply can be used with 2A device as well as 2A power supply)
    • How much output power capacity is required from power supply (If a certain watt (W) rating is written in device then power supply must at least supply that amount, ie 100W power supply can be used with 30W device as well as 30W power supply)
      • Power (watts) can be calculated by multiplying output current (amperes) with output voltage (volts). Output current can be calculated by dividing output power (watts) with output voltage (volts).
  • Connector type, if your application requires connector (ie measuring will tell you if it is compatible, if you do not want to change the power supply connector)
Transformer advantages:
  • Affordable price
  • Output noise which is coming out from the power supply is nearly every time a hum at 100Hz frequency (depending on the construction it might be 50Hz frequency)
  • Nearly everlasting and virtually impossible to destroy in normal use
  • Damn simple connection/construction (typically it consists of fuse, transformer, rectifier bridge/diode’s, filter capacitor and possible regulation components)
Application examples:
  • Battery chargers
  • Surveillance camera power supply
  • Point of sales appliances power supply
  • IT appliances power supply (modem, LAN switch, printer, scanner)
  • Power supply for your own do it yourself projects
  • Power supply for industrial needs
